My idol is mad. He has a home in the desert and a home on a farm upstate, and he only has them because of the industry of photographic prints. He keeps them all in boxes somewhere in Manhattan, in a building that could be destroyed at any moment–something he knows a lot about, and cares a lot about, or did. The method he uses to create prints and thus exist as an artist in the world is called by our authority of facts, Wikipedia, “currently available.” It’s called “thus a primary form of visual documentation of the 20th century” because it was “eclipsed by consumer color photography” late in that century. This entry might need to be updated, but yes: consumer color photography still works as an explanation of where we are, emphasis on ‘consumer.’

Some of his family photo albums have been made available to the world but they appear online only as tiny thumbnails that never get bigger no matter where you click or try to go under the hood of the Library of Congress website. You have to go to D.C. and pass through an administrative gauntlet to view them.

His blog is named for a chemical used in the development of gelatin silver prints. On this blog he discusses the “end of photography” and writes about a family scrapbook that captured the beginning of his first marriage and his early days of being a parent. “Everything about [life] is now different except for the album,” he says of the scrapbook. "It is exactly the same. Neither an artifact, nor a ‘picture,’ nor a relic, it is an actual piece of reality of that world, that love, those people that family as it was in 1970, and it will be that way forever. The only preservation involved was keeping it in a desk drawer, with the pages closed.”

There is much more on this blog about the “end of photography” but some of it is contradictory (and curmudgeonly). I wonder if he would admit that cell phone videos are “actual pieces of reality” of their world. He was never about fine art. He wanted to change the media. He mourns the careers of future fine art photographers, but doesn’t care for that sector of the art world anyway, despite being a well-known player in it. He describes himself as a maker of books. He asks, in a roundabout way, what will the legacy be of today’s changers of the media?

“There’s no way he’s on Instagram,” we joke. And he’s not. But he is on Twitter. His Twitter profile picture is a recent-looking self-portrait taken in a bathroom mirror with what looks to be an iPhone 6. His body of work is full of bathroom mirror “selfies.” Over time only the camera has changed.
